Section 1- First Formal Blog

Before starting Psychology class, i basically just considered psychology "the study of the mind".
Now I found out that it goes so much deeper than that. The idea of psychology has been around forever, because people have had emotions and feelings forever. Psychology is a never-ending topic, because everyday scientists are finding out more and more about our brains and how we act. Way back in the first times of studying psychology, scientists were limited to their findings, but now with all the amazing technology, we can find out so much more.

Chapter 1 enlightened me that we, as humans, are "overconfident". I loved reading about that because I know almost all of us have had a test the next day, but instead of studying that night, we go out with our friends, or relax on the computer. We are so confident that during school the next day we'll be able to study for 10 minutes and pass the test with flying colors. Most of the time, your score on the test will show that you really should have studied.
Psychology affects every single persons life. It affects my life because I think, I feel, I cry, I laugh. I show emotions, I show love. If psycology wasn't apart of our lives, we would all just be walking around like weird robots.

One thing I found interesting was the study that Kenneth Clark and Mamie Phipps Clark reported, in 1947, when African-American children were given a choice between Black and White dolls, most African-American children chose the white doll. I found this so interesting, because I would think that the African-American children would prefer to identify with themselves rather than with white people, because of comfort and firmiliarity.

Another thing i found interesting was when Angelo and Maria Gallina won two California lottery games on the same day! I was just wowed when i read that because that's so random, but bound to happen at least one time. Random events cause weird things to happen!

  1. Taylre! I couldn't agree more with being fascinated with the African American children choosing the white doll. One would think that they would choose what they were familar with, but yet again, it's sad to know that a lot of African American children at that time were taught that they were "less" of a person because of their skin color, and white girls were more beautiful. The topic makes me sick.

I have to disagree with you when you said "psychology has been around forever". From what I understood, psychology hasn't really developed as a true subject matter until the late 1800s, althought philosphers such as Ariostotle and Plato dabbled in it. I feel like we just started, and their is so much more to learn!!

  2. I understand what you're saying when you the idea of psychology has been around forever, but I don't fully agree with you. Yes, people have always had emotions but psychology as a science wasn't developed. The book says that psychology was born in 1879. I believe that people had curiosity about the mind and people's feelings but they never really tried to understand why people thought the way they did and what affects people's feelings.

  3. I really liked how you mentioned confidence. Confidence has alot to do with psychology because people can be confident over different things depending on past occurence. However I've tried that test idea more than once and it never works.

  4. I agree that psychology goes so much deeper than just "the study of the mind". Each day psychologist are studying and researching to help us better understand ourselves and the world around us.

  5. Taylre, i agree that alot of people are infact "overconfident." Many people just think that they will do just fine on a test and slack off that night by doing things they enjoy. Like you said, it usually shows after there done taking the test that there overconfidence was in fact wrong. I also agree that without psychology, life would be very boring. No one would have emotions or feelings, we may even not be able to talk to eachother. In my opinion, that would be very boring.

  6. I agree with you about overconfidence. I know there have been times when I have been guilty of thinking I could get by without studying for a test and on test day, of course, I would realize that if I had just spent ten minutes looking over my book I would have known the answers to all of the questions and I could have saved myself a couple of points.

  7. The overconfidence thing is something I am definitely guilty for. I never study for tests and I always leave all of my homework to the last minute because I am so confident that I'll be able to just jot something down and still get a decent grade for it.
